Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are a good way to move air in a room. They do not cool the room, but can make you feel cooler from the air movement. In the summer the fan is set to move air down to feel a breeze. Because of this cooling effect, the air conditioner can be set to a higher temperature to save energy.
In winter, reverse the direction of the fan, moving the air upward. Since warm air rises, the fan moves the warm air away from the ceiling and into the lower part of the room without a person feeling a direct breeze. Ceiling fans work well with fireplaces and wood stoves to help circulate warm air around a room.
Ceiling fans on high setting consume about 100 watts on average (about $0.01 per hour).
How to Choose a Ceiling Fan
- Fan Size -
(blade span) depends on the size of the room. See the chart to the right for proper fan size. - Light kit -
Light kits are available for ceiling fans that attach to the fan. - Damp Rating -
Needed when a fan will be mounted in a bathroom or on a covered porch. - Motor Type -
A high quality motor will have heavy duty windings and sealed bearings with permanent lubrication. A good choice for frequent use.

There are several ways to control ceiling fans and light kits.
- One wire/switch -
to turn power on/off to the fan (and light kit) at the same time - Two wire/switches -
one switch turns power on/off to the fan, the other to the light kit - Pull chains -
to adjust fan speed and light kit - Remote -
available on new or existing fans to adjust fan speed and lights - Wall control -
to adjust fan speed and light kit, wall controls are available for either one or two wire/switch configurations
How to Fix a Noisy Ceiling Fan
There are a few causes of a noise on an existing fan that was not noisy after installation. Here are some simple steps to quiet a noisy fans. After each step, test the fan for noise before going to the next step.
- Tighten all of the screws on the fan blades and motor housing (in most cases this will fix the problem)
- Apply fan oil to the bearings (except sealed bearings with permanent lubrication)
- If the fan wobbles, balance the fan blades using a balancing kit
